ULI Hines Student Competition Jury Member

ULI Hines Student Competition Jury Member

What

Since 2003, the competition has engaged multidisciplinary student teams to devise a comprehensive development program for a real, large-scale site. Teams of students representing three or more disciplines have two weeks to develop solutions, creating materials that include drawings, site plans, tables, and market-feasible financial data.

How

Typically, a jury of 12 industry leaders determines the four finalist teams and then determines the winning team. Jurors typically meet twice – first in-person in February in Washington, D.C., to evaluate the entries and name four finalists, then in-person in April in the host city to watch live presentations by the finalists and select the winner. Key Leaders and Full Members receive some priority during the selection process, however, ULI seeks a diverse jury across a number of metrics – expertise, geographic location, gender, race, and ethnicity – so we sometimes invite Associate Members to serve on the jury as well.

In 2022, the competition will be partially virtual, which means we will need additional jurors – up to 16 total. The commitment will include online review of initial submissions and a virtual meeting with the jury in February to select the four finalist teams as well as an in-person meeting in the host city in April to evaluate the live student presentations and select the winning team. ULI will also consider allowing one or two younger members to sit in on the jury review to better understand the process. For the initial review, we tend to pair jurors across three sets of expertise:

  1. Finance/Investment – will review the pro forma
  2. Design – will review the site plan, urban design, and graphic elements
  3. Urban Planning / Economic Development – will review the overall vision, narrative, planning, and community engagement elements.

To be considered for participation, please make sure to 1) update your ULI member profile with your biography and profile information before 2) filling out the Navigator inquiry form below.
