What
UrbanPlan is a realistic, engaging, and academically demanding classroom-based curriculum in which students learn about the fundamental forces that affect development. Its mission is to cultivate a sophisticated level of discourse among local stakeholders involved in land use decisions through the education of tomorrow’s voters and leaders as a way to create better communities.
How
Volunteers serve either as a Facilitator, who challenges students to improve their proposals, or a City Council Member, who selects a recipient for the request for proposals.
Why

Since 2003, the competition has engaged multidisciplinary student teams to devise a comprehensive development program for a real, large-scale site. Teams of students representing three or more disciplines have two weeks to develop solutions, creating materials that include drawings, site plans, tables, and market-feasible financial data.
Instruction programs – available as in-person events and archived online videos – provide practical, hands-on knowledge and instruction on the real estate development process and development finance. The courses are led by experienced practitioners with diverse expertise.
